ICANN releases June 2024 IDN report

Updated: Sep 27

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has released the IDN Report for June 2024. This report provides an overview of the status of Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) at both the top and second levels of the Domain Name System (DNS). It also details the work related to IDNs undertaken by the ICANN organization (ICANN org) and the ICANN community from January 2023 to June 2024. The complete report is available here.

IDNs allow individuals, businesses, and governments globally to use domain names in local languages and scripts, promoting a more digitally inclusive, multilingual Internet. Aligning with the current ICANN Strategic Plan's goal of encouraging IDNs and Universal Acceptance (UA), ICANN org has collaborated with the community to make the DNS accessible in various local languages, while ensuring the stability and security of the DNS.

ICANN org publishes the IDN Report annually to monitor the status of IDNs and showcase ongoing IDN work. The June 2024 edition covers four main areas: delegation and registration statistics, IDN policy development by the ICANN community, IDN-related projects at ICANN org, and IDN implementation and operations at ICANN org.

Key highlights of this reporting period include the latest statistics on IDN top-level domain name delegations and second-level domain name registrations, as well as progress on policy development work by the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) and the Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO). The report also details various projects undertaken by ICANN org to support these policies and assist with IDN implementation efforts.
