IDNs and linguistic diversity

IDNs are associated with greater linguistic diversity in website content, compared with traditional (ASCII) domain names.

The above chart compares the native language spoken by the global population (top line) with the primary language of web content associated with all domain names (middle line) and the primary language of web content associated with IDNs (lowest line).

From this visualisation we can see that English continues to dominate as the language of web content (51% – middle line), and that major world languages such as Chinese and Arabic are poorly represented in general web content.

With IDNs, the picture is one of greater linguistic diversity, with Chinese, Japanese, German and Russian having a greater proportion of websites compared with other domain names.
