Annual growth rate of IDNs compared with all (ASCII) domain names.
In earlier years (2009), IDNs experienced exceptionally high annual growth rates. IDN growth rates continue to be more volatile than those of all domains. This is partly a reflection of the relatively smaller numbers of IDN registrations (less than 10 million), whereas with the larger number of total registrations (more than 300 million) means that it is more difficult to ‘move the needle’ in terms of percentage growth.
The high percentage growth of IDNs between 2015-2016 is due in large part of the growth of IDN second level registrations under the .cn (China) ccTLD.
2017 saw a negative growth in IDNs from 8.7 to 7.5 registrations.
