Launch of .ευ (Greek script), November 2019!

On 14 November 2019, EURid achieved a long-awaited milestone with the launch of .ευ (equivalent to .eu in Greek script) to support the Greek language.  It completes a suite of three TLDs, .eu (Latin script), .ευ (Greek) and .ею (Cyrillic) to support all 24 official languages of the European Union with a single-script domain name experience.

The application for the Greek script .ευ was originally made by EURid in 2011, following two years’ of discussions with the ccTLD community and ICANN. The application had a difficult passage through the ICANN process, with many twists and turns. It was originally found to be confusingly similar to … .eu, but as the two TLDs were to be operated by the same registry, EURid, the ICANN rules were updated to allow for such an eventuality. Subsequent evaluations required the ICANN community to identify processes to cope with potential confusing similarity with upper-case (but not lower-case) TLDs. Finally, members of the ICANN Security and Stability Advisory Committee and the Country-Code Names Support Organisation collaborated to devise an updated risk framework for the evaluation of IDN applications.

Throughout the process, EURid worked tirelessly with colleagues from the global ccTLD community, and with the support of the European Commission, to ensure that European Greek speakers could have a single script experience for domain names in .ευ.

One of the commitments that EURid made to ICANN through the process of applying for .ευ was that when the applications were granted, it would ensure that each IDN domain name in the EURid stable would be a single script.  To fulfil this commitment, existing Greek script second level .eu IDNs have been cloned under the new TLD.

During 2015, EURid also launched support for the IDNA 2008 protocol and implemented homoglyph bundling, as part of its preparations for top level IDNs under ею and .ευ.

IDNs in .eu

This remainder of this section reports on .eu IDNs as at December 2018.

In support of the European Union’s commitment to linguistic diversity, online as well as offline, EURid has consistently shown a deep commitment to supporting Internationalised Domain Names. EURid launched IDNs at the second level under .eu in 2009. The scripts supported are Latin, Greek and Cyrillic, reflecting the scripts of the current 24 official languages of the European Union.

EURid has implemented a ‘single script’ policy, meaning that each IDN domain name in the EURid stable is in a single script. On the launch of the .ею IDN TLD, EURid put in place plans for the migration of Cyrillic script IDNs, cloning 1 430 existing Cyrillic script second level .eu IDNs under the new TLD. Plans for the retirement of second level Cyrillic script IDNs under .eu were fully implemented by the end of May 2019, a three year migration window to minimise the disruption for existing users.
