Support by registrars is essential to getting IDNs into the marketplace, thereby driving user uptake. Each year, our survey asks registries to rate ‘how well are IDNs supported by your registrars?’ Between 2010-2012, registries were generally upbeat about registrar support for IDNs, with average scores comfortably above 3.4. This year, the average score has increased slightly from its lowest level in 2016, indicating that registries are slightly more satisfied with levels of support for IDNs by registrars than in 2016, but still significantly below levels of other previous years (2010-2015).
For the 2017 survey, there was an increase in the average score for this question to 2.7, compared with average of 2.5 in 2016.
26% of registries who responded to the survey told us that registrar support for IDNs was very good or exceeded their expectations. This represents a 1% increase since last year’s survey, but is far below the highpoint of 65% in 2010.
This year, 17% of registries who responded used the two lowest ratings, an 8% drop from 2016, more closely resembling numbers from 2015 (13%). This year also represents the highest mid-range scores since our survey began, with a combined 57%.
