There are an estimated 7.5 million IDNs (as of December 2017).
Between December 2016-2017 the growth rate of IDNs was -14%. This compares with 28% between 2015-2016 and 9% growth in 2014-2015.
The impact of .vn (2016-2017)
A major driver in the reduction of IDN numbers through 2017 was a change of policy from the ccTLD registry for Viet Nam, .vn. Until January 2017, VNNIC offered free registrations of second level IDNs under .vn and this resulted in nearly 1 million registrations. During 2017, VNNIC brought its IDNs in line with its ASCII domain offerings, with registrations available through its network of registrars for a fee. By the end of 2017, second level IDNs under .vn had dropped to just over 5 000.
A note about the Chinese ccTLD
During 2017, the Chinese ccTLD registry ceased publishing registration statistics for .cn and .中国, or sharing the registration figures with the IDN World Report research team through our annual questionnaires. In line with industry practice (eg Verisign’s Domain Name Industry Brief) we have provided estimates for these TLDs based on the last reported figures.
